What is the difference in photo papers?

The surface sheen is the main difference with each photo paper. Other small changes such as weight and stiffness are also a factor but visually you will notice different levels of shine on each image. Read the descriptions of each material on this page to get an idea of what each one looks like.

Why are they different prices?

The fine art and metallic photo papers are premium materials with an added visual quality that makes them unique and shows very rich image detail, more-so than the standard glossy and luster papers.

Why don’t you offer smaller sizes like 4x6?

We specialize in custom fine art enlargements and our equipment is designed to handle that type of printing, not larger batches of smaller formats.

How do I display it?

These prints will need to be framed. You can buy a standard frame that will fit the image flush from edge to edge, or add a mat around the image to fill the frame. If you will be adding a mat we recommend our option to leave a white border around the image so you can easily position it on the mat without having to crop into your image.

Do you offer mounting or framing services?

We do not offer mounting or framing for photo prints. Please visit a local frame or craft shop for these services.

Photo Paper Prints

Canvas Press specializes in creating the highest quality giclee prints (pronounced "zhee-clay") which is the process of making high resolution fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word "giclee" is derived from the French language word "le gicleur" meaning "nozzle", or more specifically "gicler" meaning "to squirt, spurt, or spray."

At Canvas Press we know just how important your memories are. That's why we use the highest quality papers and printers in the industry. We take pride in building you a treasured photo enlargement that you'll be able to admire for many years to come.

On this page you'll find everything you need to know about our photo prints. If you still have some questions after reviewing the details, just give us a call or send an email and we'd be more than happy to assist you in designing the perfect enlargement of your photo or artwork.

Photo Paper Types

We have four different photo papers available that vary in the surface texture and sheen to create very different looks to suit your images.

Fine Art Photo Rag Paper:
A heavy-weight fine art watercolor paper. It is 308gsm with a smooth, flat surface that provides vibrant colors and rich detail. Made of 100% cotton, it is fully archival.

Glossy Photo Paper:
An ultra smooth bright white paper with high gloss finish. Shows vibrant colors and detail with rich, deep blacks.

Luster Photo Paper:
For a less reflective, more semi-gloss surface that still shows brilliant depth, our luster option is a great choice. It has a slight dimpled texture and resists fingerprints.

Metallic Paper:
This paper enables you to create stunning prints that previously could only be created in a darkroom. The metallic, high-gloss surface on this 10-mil, 255g photo paper results in prints that are sharp, vibrant, and exceptionally rich-looking with a pearlescent glow.

Border Styles

There are two border options for photo papers.

White Border:
Your image will be printed exactly to size and a 1/2" white border will be added around your image. If you plan on framing with a mat, this will be your best option.

Cut to Image:
Your image will be printed and cut exactly to size.

B&W or Sepia

Allow us to create the look you want for your finished image with the possibility to convert your image to another color mode. These adjustments are done by our experienced specialists who take care to adjust for overall exposure and contrast, making sure you get a rich depth to your new image and not a flat, murky overlay from an automated system.

Photo As Is: If you are happy with the image as a color photo or have already done your own image conversion or enhancement then select this option to maintain what you have setup.

Black & White: Create a timeless look or avoid undesirable distracting colors with a classic black & white tone to your image. This will work well in any environment, from traditional to modern.

Sepia: A soft brown tone to your image for an antique look, or to warm up the feel of an image from the standard black & white.

Retouching

Sometimes an image just doesn't always translate like you envisioned it or as you saw in real life. Our retouching services will help bring back what is lacking and ensure everything looks just right. We can also give new life to older and damaged images, restoring their original beauty. At two levels, you can pick the option right for your image.

Minor Retouching: For minor touchups including, but not limited to, facial smoothing and blemish removal, color cast adjustment, red-eye and date-stamp removal.

Major Retouching: When your image needs more help, such as background replacement, large object removal and antique image restoration this is your option.

Please use the comments section of the order process to list your specific retouching requests. More detailed and advanced requests may require additional time and expense and if required will be discussed before production.

Oilworks

A unique service offered exclusively through Canvas Press is our OilWorks painting enhancement. Our artists digitally hand-paint the image to give the finished canvas the look of a real oil painting. Different levels of service allow you to get a truly unique and one-of-a-kind art piece without the expense of commissioning a costly original painting.

True Artist: The look of brush strokes are added to the entire image and minor adjustments are made to enhance the painted appearance while remaining true to your original image.

Add Text

While a photo may be worth a thousand words, adding a few more in may be the icing on the cake. Include a signature or caption to your printed image, or a heartfelt message, poem or quote to get just the right sentiment across.

Our various font options will help you match the style that your image and text require, and choose any color, location and size you like. We'll make sure that it will be readable and if it doesn't appear to be so we'll contact you with ideas on how to make it work.

The site limits your input to 125 characters but for special projects we can accommodate more. Include the first 125 characters to set the font, size and starting position, then make a comment on the order that you are sending the full text separately. Send us an email with text in its entirety and we'll finish setting up your order.
