Printing a picture on canvas is no longer a difficult proposition. Advancements in industrial printers and more widespread availability have brought this art form into the mainstream.

This article will guide you thru the simple steps necessary to design a picture on canvas and have it produced.

1. Decide on a picture.

Any picture will work. Snapshots from vacation, a party or family reunion work very well. Pictures of fine art or outer space reproduce beautifully. The picture should be a digital image, but if you only have a hard copy it can be scanned. Just remember that you can not print a copyrighted picture on canvas.

2. Decide how much involvement you want to have in the artistic process.

You may opt to use a simple approach and allow the professionals to handle cropping and other decisions or choose a more hands on approach in which you control the artistic process.

3. Pick Landscape or Portrait.

Traditionally wide scenic shots use landscape while close-ups of people look better in portrait but nothing is set in stone and you can have it either way.

4. Pick one of nine standard sizes for you canvas.

Standard sizes range from 8 X 10 inches to 30 X 40 inches. Non-standard sizes will require using the more detailed tool mentioned in step two.

5. Pick a color treatment.

The standard treatment is glorious full color but your picture on canvas can be produced in Black and White or Sepia.

6. Decide what type of canvas you wish to have.

In this step canvas refers to the finished product not the base material being printed on. Your canvas can be printed and shipped directly to you without mounting we refer to this as non-stretched canvas. The most popular canvas is called the gallery wrap. In the gallery wrap the picture runs completely around the edge of the frame giving the canvas a modern artist appeal. A border can be added to the picture on canvas to give the appearance of a traditional matt. A standard stretched canvas is also available if you want to actually frame your picture.

7. Decide on manipulation of the image.

Any problems with your picture can be addressed at this time. Minor touchups, color correction or redeye removal can all be selected. At this point you may also opt to have a professional artist add brush strokes and personal touches to give the appearance of an oil painting. This can turn an ordinary picture on canvas into a fine art reproduction.

8. Attach your picture.

This step is very easy, just click on the browse button and navigate to wherever the picture is stored on your computer. If you have ever added an attachment to an e-mail you will be able to upload your picture to the website.

9. Make any comments or give special instructions.

If you feel the need to bring attention to a specific part of the picture just type a message to the printer. These instructions will be read by the person printing your picture on canvas not a computer.

10. Push the button labeled, add to cart.
