Have you ever thought of taking a picture of your dog but can’t ever decide what to use as a backdrop? The staging of a portrait can make all the difference in the world. Everyone has seen the snapshots in a frame around a person’s house where the dog is looking up and has red eye. You also get a lot of unwanted things in the picture, like shoes left out on the floor or a stain on the carpet from your child’s fruit punch.

Here are a few ideas to help you with setting up a backdrop for your image that will ensure you get the best dog photo you can.

1. Choose the location. You want an area that well lit so that your dog appears clearly in the image. You also want a location that you can either get down on the dog’s level or you can get the dog up to your level. This will help you to avoid having a ton of images of the top of your dog’s head.

2. Choose the scenery. Use an opaque fabric backdrop if you do not want anything else to appear in the image. Give yourself enough room so that the fabric can drape across the surface the dog will sit on. This will keep the image from having a crease along the back and will help avoid shadows. Another option is to use a chair or a bed in the image. A wing back chair, for example, will provide its own backdrop. You will want to avoid overly patterned fabrics on either a fabric backdrop or a furniture backdrop. The patterns can make the image look overly cluttered and lose focus on the dog.

3. Outdoor shot. If shooting outside, take several test shots at different times of day prior to your main image. This will help you determine when the best light will be available for your photograph.
