My family is not what you would call typical. We all have very exotic personalities which can make gift giving a tedious chore. My mother, in her infinite wisdom, has decided that this year, she wants to do a “family Christmas gift”. To me that roughly translates into “give me a new bread machine or toaster that we can all use”, but I decided to go along with it to make things easier.

I sat down at my computer, because there is no way that I would be caught dead shopping at the mall after November, and started surfing for something that would fit the bill. I stumbled across a company called Canvas Press and started flipping through their site to see what they offered. I have to tell you, I was really quite impressed. Canvas Press allows you to take a digital image and transform it into a canvas print.

The wheels started turning and I came up with a plan. I called a family meeting, uncle Dan and Aunt Ruthie attending via webcam, and told them all about Canvas Press and this idea that I had for a family photo. I was expecting to have to sell it a bit harder but everyone seemed to really get into the idea.

My plan was simple. I wanted to create an image via photo editing software giving us all a cube in the overall design. Think Brady Bunch and you’ll have the general idea. I had everyone sit down in front of a green background I spray painted and took their picture with my digital camera. Aunt Ruthie and Uncle Dan were able to do this from their own homes in Florida and Chicago respectively and then just email me the image.

I got to work right away, having each person spend a few minutes with me picking out a background to put behind them that fit their personality and whatever get-up they had chosen to wear on picture day. I then compiled the overall image and emailed out the proof to everyone. It was an instant success. I mean, really, where else could you find a goth/punk/cowboy/house-mom collage image? I then uploaded the image to www.canvaspress.com.

Everyone chipped in money, making the cost per person very reasonable, and I ordered the biggest custom size photo to canvas print for the money. They even shipped it to our door. This year, as we all sit around the tree, we can look at our family as we see each person - individual, exotic and part of the group.
