Each and every spring, families across the county head for nearby valleys, lakesides and sprawling fields of wild flowers in attempt to capture that classic, spring photo. You know the one. The kids are perched carefully in a colorful stretch of bright flowers. It's beautiful, timeless and works every time.
It's April, so here in Texas bluebonnets are all the craze. As the state flower, the bluebonnet gets a great deal of attention but right around Easter each year, its popularity sky-rockets. All the highways line with cars as families stake their claim on the perfect roadside photo studio, a.k.a. a bridge embankment. Trusty old dad brought the tripod and he's determined to get some dazzling shots of the kiddos amongst nature's beauty. Whether you're attempting to capture this brand of photo for the first time or update your previous version, you'll need to remember a few key points to get it just right and do it quick before the allergies kick in and spoil the fun.
- Safety. If you're going for the roadside shot, park carefully and make sure your little one's aren't in any danger of traffic. If you're in the country, don't stray to far from the car and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife that may not be excited about your presence. Also, be sure that you are not trespassing on any private property.
- The Proper Tools. Having the proper tools is key to a great photo. A tripod is a great idea. It prevents camera-jiggle and the blurry results as well as allows mom and dad to join in. Any modern day digital camera will get you a good picture that's ready for prints. Avoid cell phone and disposable cameras completely in order to get a quality photo suitable for printing on canvas.
- Use Natural Light. Set up your shot so that the sun is behind you and your children are facing into the light. This is especially important in the morning or late afternoon. Also, try using the 'Portrait' setting on your camera.
- Get down on their level. Adjust your tripod so the camera is at their eye level. Having them gaze directly into the camera is not a must though as the eye level angle alone will create an inviting and personal touch. On the other hand, try some pictures from an extreme angle above or below eye level for a more dramatic effect. From above, it will be best to have them looking up at the camera. From below, looking away to the side will be an instant classic.
Now you've got the tips and tools you'll need to get out there and snap those timeless pictures of your children posing and frolicking in the Spring-wonderland of your region.
