Download Free Hi-Res Images from the Hubble Telescope

by Caroline Ulbrich

2008-04-25

Astronomical photography can be truly astonishing. We've all seen images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope which gives us a brief glimpse into our vast universe. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) works with Hubble's images to learn more about celestial bodies and phenomena and educate the public. The Institute's Office of Public Outreach was created to make the technology and information out and available for educators, engineers and the general public.

Hubblesite.org is one of the online outreach programs from STScI and NASA which makes Hubble images available to the public and provides a wealth of information regarding the telescope and the picture taking process.

To be more specific, Hubblesite.org not only puts Hubble images out on the web, they have made high quality (where available) images available for download, and they encourage all people to have these images printed at their convenience. The images have been released into the public domain and are therefore not copyrighted material.

The possibilities this opens up are (no pun intended) astronomical. Download your favorite images of constellations, nebulas, planets and more. Use the images for something as simple as your desktop wallpaper, or have them blown up and printed to decorate your home, office and more.

These high quality images would fit in perfectly to a company involved in research and development or other areas of the technology industry. The images can be inspirational and help motivate workers and visitors, creating a productive and pleasant working environment. Teachers can use these images as not only classroom decoration, but teaching materials.

Another benefit of Hubblesite is the "behind the pictures" tutorial. It explains in detail how Hubble actually takes the pictures. Learn about the colors visible in the photos and also why some images have an unusual shape.

Visit Hubblesite.org to learn all sorts of things about astronomy and the galaxy. Follow the link to the Gallery, where you will find all the images available. Specifically, the "Astronomy Printshop" has files sized and formatted for printing. Since it is no cost to you, the best idea is to download the largest file available, in the Printshop it is labeled as "16x20." You can then upload this file to CanvasPress.com and have one of Hubble's amazing shots on canvas in your home. Because the images are available at such a hi-resolution, we can take them even larger than 16x20 without loss of quality. Try out the Canvas Design Tool to preview what will wrap on the gallery wrap and check the print quality indicator to see how big you can go.

Canvas Press is working to make these images easily available to our customers. To get started now go download your favorites from Hubblesite and start sending them to us!
